Choosing where to donate

One of the “feel good” things I enjoy doing is donating to causes which I deem important. Throughout the year, and in particular near the winter holidays and during the first few months of the calendar year, I receive several requests from organizations asking me to donate money. As a matter of fact, I receive as many requests online and via USPS to make donations as I do from credit card companies that I have been pre-approved for their credit cards! And that is a lot! I toss out all the credit card requests, then try to sift my way through the organizations asking for charitable donations. As a Massage Therapist and as a Musician, I am frequently asked to donate either my time or a massage service to help with an event or an auction. As much as I would like to donate to each and every one of them, realistically it is not possible.

So, how does one go about whittling down the list of possibilities of where to make a donation? Here are some things to consider before deciding where:

  1. Have you or do you know someone who has suffered from an illness, disease, syndrome, or some form of cancer? If so, perhaps this is a good place to start. Choose an organization, research how much of the money you donate actually goes to the organization, then decide on an amount that fits your budget.
  2. Do you love animals, but get overwhelmed by some of the commercials, advertisements, and other various media you see? I know I do! My best suggestion is to stay local. Usually the local SPCA (or Humane Society, depending on where you live) is the best place to donate. You can not only donate money, but also donate supplies such as old towels, bedding, and food.
  3. Do you have a passion (athletic, artistic, musical, dramatic) where organizations exist which can really use a donation in order to function at optimal levels? I know there are several in the Buffalo area. I recommend you check to see if the organization is a not-for-profit organization (501c3 status), check the reputation of it, check the history of it, then check the viability of the organization.   Next decide if you want your donation to go towards a specific thing (such as purchasing equipment, providing scholarships, refurbishing facilities, etc.) or if you just prefer to make a general donation.
  4. Are you concerned that your budget really does not allow for you to make a monetary donation? Consider donating your time and talents! There are a lot of organizations where you can truly make a difference simply by lending a hand. Over the years, this has proven to be one of only the ways I can help out. It is very satisfying, though, and I highly recommend it!
  5. Do you like to participate in walks, races, or other “athletic” endeavors? There are literally hundreds of events held in communities nationwide where a portion of your entry fee goes towards a charitable organization. As a matter of fact, they count on people who simply like the preparation for and challenge of participating in a race, walk, or ride.

Of course, there are always Girl Scout cookies to buy, Boy Scout popcorn varieties to enjoy, chicken and/or spaghetti dinners for Church, Band fruit in December, and times to “round up” at the register, etc. Pick and choose these as you deem fit. I certainly do, as I have children, friends, and children of friends who do fundraising for their various activities.

No matter which avenue you choose to go down when you decide where you wish to donate, your contribution of money, time, talent, and energy will be very welcome and greatly appreciated. Being charitable is a selfless, feel-good, satisfying, and fulfilling act of kindness that everyone should feel comfortable doing. Bring on some smiles and warm everyone’s hearts today. Make that donation!
